SUIMONTEI

June 2022 - Takabatake, Nara

Takabatake is a historic area in Nara, one of the ancient capitals of Japan. The project was to revive a sukiya-style Japanese house completed in 1923 into one-guest-per day accommodation and membership café-salon named "Suimontei".
The design was an attempt to find a new balance, with a strong awareness of the contrast between the east and west axes of distance, in addition to the contrast between the time axis.
The elements that make up the space include mid-century modernist furniture that brought the culture of the West to the East, and conceptual art that presents concepts from the present to the future.
